Head of Auctions, Post-War & Contemporary Art

We are seeking a head of Post-War & Contemporary to join our artnet Auctions Team. In this role, you will responsible for managing the success of the department to grow revenue and drive for quality sales. You will lead the business, the team, and the client base towards growth while ensuring a best-in-class client experience.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Drive quality and performance of sales
    • Manage the team to meet goals and oversee department results
    • Strategically plan the calendar, theme, and value of works for each sale to meet monthly targets
    • Oversee the quality of each consignment and the collective impact of each curated auction
    • Continually build an understanding of the current market, competitors, and key players
    • Review sales results for new areas of opportunity to grow the business
    • Manage KPIs, including sell-through rates and revenue-to-sales ratios
    • Consign and sell work for key client relationships, while distributing the majority of sales evenly across the team
    • Oversees the successful completion/close of deals
  • Develop and manage team
    • Coach team through regular performance reviews and ongoing support
    • Guide for best practices in pricing, negotiation, and client outreach
    • Ensure each specialist is actively building new relationships to grow the business
    • Oversee individual targets and compensation
    • Cultivates a positive, motivated, and results-driven atmosphere
    • Lead interviewing and hiring as needed
  • Build client base and relationships
    • Develop and foster a network of clients while actively building new, meaningful relationships
    • Act as a representative of artnet and build alliances and networks of key influencers in the market
    • Use knowledge and expertise, such as writing articles, lecturing, and more, to expand artnet’s presence and create a competitive advantage 
    • Develop and nurture clients to convert buyers and sellers, focus on growth, retain clients, and build loyalty
  • Maximize cross-functional partnerships
    • Participate in strategy and implementation of marketing activities to drive successful sales including email, social media, and events
    • Partner with VP and product development to develop a best-in-class user experience
    • Collaborate with client services to improve post-sale handling and maintain strong client relations
    • Partner with other internal departments to identify and develop cross-selling opportunities

Qualifications:

  • BA in art history, art management, or similar, graduate degree a plus
  • Approximately 8 years of work experience in the contemporary art market as a senior specialist or head of department and business-driver
  • Proven ability to initiate new business while maintaining existing client relationships
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and networking skills
  • Strong sense of professionalism and discretion
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, revenue-driven environment
  • Must be able to meet revenue target with growth on a yearly basis
  • Knowledge of e-commerce platforms and online art sales
  • Self-starter with the capacity to work in a team environment
