Head of Post-War & Contemporary, artnet Auctions

artnet is the leading international platform to buy, sell, and research art online.  Founded in 1989, artnet is a leader of industry change that has shaped the international art market with a comprehensive suite of products that includes artnet Auctions, the Price Database, the Gallery Network, and artnet News.

We are seeking a Head of Post-War & Contemporary to join our artnet Auctions team.  In this role, you will lead the department and be responsible to curate sales, source artwork and guide the team to successfully produce high quality and profitable auctions. You will guide the business, the team, and the client base towards growth while ensuring a best-in-class client experience. The position manages a team of five and reports directly to the VP of artnet Auctions.

Develop and curate Post-War & Contemporary sales of unique artworks

  • Source and sell artwork for key client relationships, while supporting the majority of sales evenly across the team
  • Use expertise to strategically plan the calendar, theme, and value of works for each auction to grow the business
  • Oversee the quality of each artwork and the collective impact of each curated auction
  • Guide the team to meet consignment and revenue goals, and oversee department results
  • Manage Private Sales and oversee the successful completion/close of deals
  • Review sales results and market trends for new areas of opportunity to grow the business
  • Continually build an understanding of the current market, competitors, and key players
  • Partner with VP to create strategies to increase sales/profitability and build/incentivize the teams, and lead the implementation of these strategies for your department
  • Manage KPIs, including sell-through rates and revenue-to-sales ratios

Build client base and relationships

  • Develop and foster a network of clients while actively building new, meaningful relationships
  • Act as an ambassador of artnet and build alliances and networks of key influencers in the market
  • Use knowledge and expertise, such as writing articles, lecturing, and more, to expand artnet’s presence and create a competitive advantage 
  • Develop and nurture clients to convert buyers and sellers, focus on growth, retain clients, and build loyalty

Develop and manage team

  • Coach team through regular performance reviews and ongoing support
  • Guide for best practices in pricing, negotiation, and client outreach
  • Ensure each specialist is actively building new relationships to grow the business
  • Oversee individual targets and compensation
  • Cultivate a positive, motivated, and results-driven atmosphere
  • Lead interviewing and hiring as needed

Maximize cross-functional partnerships

  • Partner with other auctions departments (prints, photo’s) to identify and develop cross-selling and curating opportunities
  • Participate in strategy and implementation of marketing activities to drive successful sales including email, social media, and events
  • Collaborate with client services to support post-sale handling and maintain strong client relations


  • Approximately 10+ years’ experience in the Post-War & Contemporary art market including roles as a Senior Specialist or Head of Department and business-driver
  • Capability to deliver and oversee consignments and sales of artworks spanning $10K-$1M value
  • Deep knowledge of the art market, artists and collectors
  • Experience managing a team
  • Proven ability to initiate new business while maintaining existing client relationships
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and networking skills
  • Strong sense of professionalism and discretion
  • BA in art history, art management, or similar, graduate degree a plus
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, revenue-driven environment growing targets on an annual basis
  • Knowledge of e-commerce platforms and online art sales
